The Seven Principles of Taoism offer a gentle, practical path to finding your inner calm and creating greater balance in everyday life. Through stillness, mindful action, presence, nature and letting go, these timeless Taoist teachings can help you move with the natural flow of life and return to a deeper sense of peace within.

1. Begin the Day in Stillness

How you begin your day is how you begin your life. Each morning is an opportunity to return to yourself. Before the world rushes in, give yourself a few moments of silence - to breathe, stretch, and connect to your centre.

Try this:  Before you rise, place your hand on your heart and take three slow breaths. Ask yourself, “What energy do I want to bring into today?”

2. Act Without Struggle (Wu Wei)

Wu Wei means effortless action. Moving with the flow of life rather than against it. It’s not about doing nothing; it’s about doing things in harmony with what already is.

Try this: When you notice resistance, pause and ask, “What if I let this unfold instead of forcing it?” Trust that ease leads to clarity.

3. Turn Ordinary Acts into Rituals

Don’t rush past your life - meet it where it is. Everyday moments, like washing dishes, making tea, or walking, can become sacred when done with presence. Life isn’t a race to finish; it’s a rhythm to feel.

Try this: Choose one simple daily task and give it your full attention. Feel the sensations, notice the sounds, breathe with it, and let it become your meditation in motion.

4. Follow Your Breath During the Day

“Returning is the motion of the Tao, yielding is the way of the Tao.” Your breath is your anchor, a constant tide that connects you to peace and awareness. When you return to your breath, you come home to yourself.

Try this:  Set a visual reminder on your phone that says “Breathe”, and each time it appears, take three mindful breaths and soften your shoulders.  Or, simply do this when you become aware your body is tense or your mind is racing.

5. Spend Time in Nature

Be still like a mountain and flow like a river. Nature doesn’t judge or demand. It invites you to remember your natural state - calm, alive, and in rhythm with all that is.

Try this:  Step outside, and notice the colours, textures, and sounds. Let the air touch your skin and remind you — you are part of this vast harmony.

6. Let Go of the Need to Control

Life moves through cycles of change. Resisting those cycles creates tension; trusting them restores peace. Strength isn’t about holding on, it’s about bending without breaking.

Try this:  When things don’t go as planned, breathe deeply and say, “I let go of the need to control this moment. Instead, I trust life to unfold in its own perfect way.”

7. End the Day in Release

Lao Tzu said, “To hold, you must first open your hand. Let go.” Before sleep, reflect gently: What did I resist today? Where did I flow? What can I release now? Letting go clears your inner space for rest and renewal.

Try this: As you lie in bed, take a slow exhale and imagine releasing your worries into the night. Feel yourself emptying into peace.
