Have you ever felt like no matter how much effort you make, you’re not getting closer to what you truly want? You set goals, make promises to yourself, even take action and yet, the results don’t reflect your intentions. What if the reason isn’t a lack of effort, but a deeper, hidden truth you’re not seeing? We Only See What We Want to See - Many of us look at our lives through a superficial lens, focusing on what we desire and setting goals around those wants. But often, we aren’t fully conscious of the underlying commitments driving our behaviour. These first commitments reveal what we truly value, even if that truth is uncomfortable. And sometimes, that truth is rooted in fear - fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of emotional vulnerability.
We say we want success, love, or freedom but beneath that desire may lie a stronger commitment to staying safe, being emotionally comfortable, or avoiding change. The Role of the Ego in Hiding Our Truth When we’re not ready to face our truth, the ego steps in with perfectly reasonable justifications. It tells us why things didn’t work out, blames external circumstances or other people, and keeps us in a cycle of victimhood or judgement. But these justifications are distractions. They protect us from discomfort and also from growth. They prevent us from leading our lives with conscious awareness and intention. A Closer Look at First Commitments We may say we want to increase our income or expand our business. However, each time an opportunity arises, we repeat patterns of the past - we delay, avoid, or feel overwhelmed. Deep down your first commitment might be to feel emotionally safe and we associate financial growth with risk, stress, or potential failure. So our behaviour reflects this hidden commitment, not our stated goal. Or perhaps you long for closer, more trusting relationships. You reach out, communicate, and try new strategies, yet the connection doesn't deepen. You notice the same scenario with the same results keeps recurring, and so the stories and the meanings we attribute to a lack of success are further validated. Consider this, that unconsciously on a deeper level, your first commitment may be to feel seen and validated. When that need isn’t met, you withdraw, blame, or take on the role of victim. Without realising it, your energy repels the very intimacy you desire. Why Seeing Our Truth Matters Our underlying commitments always reflect our true intentions. They reveal the gap between what we say we want and what we’re actually choosing through our thoughts, actions, and energy. When we avoid introspection, we remain stuck in self-defeating habits. But when we face our truth with courage, we liberate ourselves from old stories, excuses, and patterns that no longer serve us. To ‘see’ our truth, even when it feels uncomfortable, is a sacred act of soul-loving. It brings light to the unconscious agreements we’ve made with ourselves. It dissolves the energetic prison of blame and judgment, freeing us to make new, empowered choices. Moving from Suffering to Simplicity Suffering is often a result of internal conflict, the tension between our stated goals and our first, hidden commitments. When we bring these to the surface, we unlock the power to create real change. Seeing our truth allows us to ask better questions:
Living our truth creates a life of simplicity where the mind is peaceful, the heart is open, and the path forward becomes clear.
