There are moments in life when our energy feels low, our direction unclear, and our motivation scattered. In these moments, it’s natural to reach for what we want - the comforting option, the easy option, the familiar option. It’s the voice that says, “Do the thing that feels good right now.” And because it sounds soothing, we often trust it. But this can be a quiet trap. What feels good in the moment isn’t always what supports our long-term mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual wellbeing. Sometimes the very things we convince ourselves we “want” are actually expressions of old habits - self-sabotage disguised as comfort, procrastination dressed up as self-care, or avoidance wrapped in justification. We may hear that familiar internal whisper to hold back, but is this the voice we trust or is it the voice that can keep us circling the same patterns? You may recognise that voice:
These thoughts aren’t wrong. They’re simply familiar. And familiarity can keep us going around in circles. Why We Lean Toward Our Wants When we’re tired or stressed, we naturally move away from discomfort and toward anything that gives relief. But this momentary relief often pulls us further from our goals, clarity, and wellbeing. Our wants are shaped by emotion, fear, and habit. They speak loudly because they promise ease. Our needs, however, are guided by a deeper wisdom, the part of us that sees beyond the moment and understands the bigger picture of our life. Listening to the Higher Voice We’re always encouraged to trust our inner voice, but the distinction lies here: Our lower voice speaks from fear and familiarity. Our higher voice speaks from truth, intuition, and alignment. The higher voice is gentle and steady. It guides us toward the choices our future self will thank us for, even when those choices feel uncomfortable or require effort. It’s the voice that leads us toward the outcomes aligned with our growth, values, and purpose. A powerful practice in moments of uncertainty is simply to pause and ask: “What is for my highest good right now?” That single question interrupts the emotional urgency, reduces overwhelm, and helps us reconnect with clarity. From that space of inner calm, it becomes easier to discern whether we’re following our intuition or reacting from fear and habit. Choosing What We Need — Even When It’s Uncomfortable Doing what we need often requires honesty with ourselves. It may mean having a difficult conversation, addressing something uncomfortable in our health or business, or breaking a habit we’ve used to cope. But choosing the path aligned with our highest good always leads to progress. It’s how we evolve into the person who is growing. Our ego gives reasons to delay. Our fears give reasons to avoid. Our higher-self gives the truth, the next step toward progress, even if it’s challenging. Next time you feel out of alignment, pause before following your wants. Take a breath, reconnect with your inner calm, and listen for the quieter truth beneath the noise. You may be surprised by the wisdom you hear when you give yourself the space to listen.
